Prayer in these Last Days

1 Pet. 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.

In addressing God in prayer, consider Neh. 9:5-6 and Matt. 6:9. Prayer in praise to glorify the Lord of Lords and King of Kings begins directly with Him. He rules supreme. Satan is only a prince by permission. Consider Jesus’ prayer in John 17 and Ps. 10:3.

Rehearse your relationship with God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Consider His promises, which do not, and will not fail. We have, in Christ, a "new" unconditional covenant. We realize we have no merit of our own (Eph. 2:8,9) to call on Him for our salvation. But, as children of God, believers are fully forgiven on the basis of Christ’s merit and sacrifice for sin. "All of God and none of man."

Continue in prayer by confessing the sins of our nation and our church. Consider Rev. 2:2-5. In the midst of all evil, all evil ways, all wickedness, our God is working for good, especially in the life of every believer. Think of history and the end thereof. Our God is working both in you and in the world to bring history to an end! Yes, history has an end point! The result will be DELIVERANCE for all who believe in Christ. Count it all joy, my brethren, when you endure through trial and tribulation.

Continue with the giving of thanks, according to 1 Thess. 5:18. This is the will of God in all things. Compare with John 16: 23 and 1 John 5:13-15. Christian believer, in the midst of your concerns, understand that concern can lead to worry upon worry. When worries lead to depression, that is sin. God is in control. Take a long range view and rest in Christ, not in self.

Then, First of All (1 Tim. 2:1-6), pray for:

Our Spiritual Warfare, Matt. 6:13; Eph. 6:12-18. Hate evil and wickedness and sin, not people.

For those currently in authority-this too is the will of God (Rom. 13)

The elections next Tuesday, November 4…pray and pray and pray.

The kingdom of God and its extension throughout the world-Matt 6:10. Let the success of the Word of God be our goal. Pray that the living God may open hearts and doors of ministry.

Pray for the coming of the Lord ("Thy kingdom come, thy will be done").

And pray for the peace and restoration of Israel. Ezek 37 reminds us that the dry bones WILL be restored.

Pray for the Sick, the infirm, the handicapped and those unable to function in their bodies…Jas. 5:14-18

Finally, pray for our and your brethren, where-ever they are … There is a lot of "flesh religion".

Pulpit Messages

Is my pastor uncaring?
There he is, my pastor, preaching mightily from the pulpit about sin and damnation, love and sacrifice, and that time may be growing short. “The wages of sin is death.” “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” As his eyes gaze expectantly out over the congregation, they settle on me, I am sure, as he says, “You are terminal.”

My pastor did it again. Preaching, teaching and reading the scriptures inspires him to comment on the intimate relationship God wants with all men to come to Himself. But separation impairs man’s ability to respond, for “There is none that does good, not even one.” Even Christian believers’ conduct can impair the relationship. Conduct such as “Why did God do that to me?” Or, “Why can’t I have that?” As he quotes Psalm 51:4, his eyes gaze again over the congregation as he finally settles on me. I am sure of that. He says, “All complaining is against God.”

Speaking of Christian conduct, my pastor says we need to learn the practice of “Put On”, and “Put Off”. What is that all about? He speaks of habits, some good, and some bad. When you put off the bad habit, it must be replaced by putting on a good habit or the bad will remain in place and gradually produce more fruit of its own kind. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.” Why is it that he seems to gaze out and settle on me again: “Each one is responsible for the consequences of his own actions.”

I think that man over there besmirched my character and behavior. Why is it that the very next message of my pastor in the pulpit is based on 1 Corinthians 13: “Agape love does not take into account a wrong suffered.”

My pastor should be more careful to avoid prosecution. He keeps preaching about sin: societal sins, personal sin, homosexual sin, political sins, abortion sins, my sin, your sins, original sin, national sin, and sometimes government sins. He even mentioned his own sins recently. Are these hate crimes? Will they take him away to jail? A better question is, “Will I stand by him and support him until they take both of us away to jail?”

The God Haters

The God Haters:

Yesterday, on Fox News TV, the host (Britt Hume) illustrated political lies in the current campaign. It was claimed that the VP on the Republican ticket was not making herself available for questions and discussion to journalists, and that this was a clear sign of her unfitness for office. More derogatory words than these were used. Mr. Hume commented with facts that she was making herself available MUCH more so than both members of the opposition, and even more than her presidential running mate. Then, a journalist’s comments were flashed on the screen showing the hate commentary he had written. Now, the kicker: that journalist was Christopher Hitchens.

For some time now in Christian circles, there has been amazement (horror?) at the writings of prominent atheists. They are published, vitriolic and accusatory about Christianity and our God. Nothing new about that. Some refer to the four horsemen of the atheistic apocalypse: Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Sam Harris (The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation), Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything), and a man named Daniel Dennett. Now we understand some of the far-left criticism. It is not about Sarah Palin’s qualifications. It is about her Christianity. These are God Haters. They claim that science must destroy Christianity, that it is God who has a mighty body count in wars, and that the uselessness of prayer by believers is well known. These angry atheistic books have reached best-seller lists for a few years. We can expect more of this in the next two weeks.

Dear Abby

I am making this up from an actual Dear Abby letter:

Once a week I go to my single daughter's home to mow and trim. My truck is parked in her driveway with the gas can left in the back, and is plainly visible. After mowing, although a small lawn, I am very tired. I go into the house to rest, get a drink and visit. After an hour or so, I come back out and prepare to leave. Lo and behold, the gas can is missing from the back of the truck. What to do?

I did nothing. Well, almost nothing. The following week I return to mow and trim. I have a new gas can, filled up with gas ...and two pounds of sugar. I mow and trim and then go in to rest, get a drink and visit. After that, I leave to go home,...but the gas can is missing again! I go back into my daughter's home to tell her what happened. As I am leaving a second time, I notice that a neighbor's boy and his friend are pushing his car up the street with leg power. He mutters something about "There's something wrong with the engine".

The End of Days

The Signs of the Times: 1 Timothy 3:1-3
In the current AFA magazine, they quote a George Barna poll or survey that suggests our culture (read World-System) is falling deeper into a moral maelstrom. It seems so plausible in this election cycle, since it is easy to find a candidate talking about morality and values. The Barna Group survey said that nearly 55% of adults discuss moral issues on a weekly basis. Many would agree that our values as a country are changing and not for the better. The Barna survey supports that theory.
"Researchers asked adults about their participation in eight activities described in the table below. Most had done at least one of the eight during the past week!
The most common of the eight bad behaviors was profanity. Nearly 3 out of every 10 people admitted to using foul language in public in the past week. About 2 in 10 said they gambled, including lottery tickets, and nearly that many also said they intentionally looked at porn.
One of the most surprising outcomes was the result for those adults under 25. Barna found that young people are redefining what it means to do the right thing. In fact, they are more than twice as likely as other adults to engage in the behaviors considered morally inappropriate. Two-thirds of the Mosaics (under 25) had used profanity in public. The Mosaics were also nine times more likely than Boomers (44-62) to engage in sex outside of marriage (38 vs. 4 %).

George Barna, who directed the survey, said the results show a ‘major shift’ in American life. "We are witnessing the development and acceptance of a new moral code in America,’ he said. ‘Mosaics have had little exposure to traditional moral teaching and limited accountability for such behavior. The moral code began to disintegrate when the generation before them – the Baby Busters (25 to 43 years) – pushed the limits that had been challenged by their parents –the Baby Boomers of 44 to 62 years."

The same survey showed big differences between other groups as well People who called themselves mostly liberals were more likely to engage in inappropriate behaviors than those who labeled themselves mostly conservative. Liberals were five times as likely to engage in sex outside of marriage, and more than three times as likely to look at porn. Men were more likely to engage in the bad behaviors. They were more likely to get drunk, use profanity in public and gamble………….       The consistent deterioration of the Bible as the source of moral truth has led to a nation where people have become independent judges of right and wrong, basing their choices on feelings and circumstances. It is not likely that America will return to a more traditional moral code until the nation experiences significant pain from its moral choices."
But, will ‘significant pain’ really do anything for moral change? Will the very epitome of evil be called upon as evil and men to repent of sin? Will the deepening moral maelstrom be reversed for a ‘better world’?

Listen to what Tom White (Voice of the Martyrs) says about "Where Did Evil Go?"
"One morning I woke up and the word evil had fled around the corner like a beaten dog. People regularly say words like ‘immoral,’ ‘bad’ or ‘corrupt’, but let’s face it, the E-word does not go out for a walk in public these days. Evil -–the word at least – is no longer a part of the American vocabulary.
Evil, of course, is not forgotten in Scripture. The word is mentioned nearly 600 times in the KJV. But calling something or someone evil today will jeopardize your social standing. I guess the word evil is just too definitive for our modern society. Churches became more sophisticated and comfortable in the last 50 years. They do not want to lose members by appearing to be uneducated. So they have shied away from talking about Satan, the devil and evil.
We would rather say (and use) words like depraved, offensive and unseemly. But intellectualizing a spiritual term is a trick of Satan because it hides the spirit behind the term. When we do not agree that something is, in fact evil, then evil loses its absolute standard. This allows the devil to enjoy watching us debate endlessly about whether social lifestyles and world religions can really be called ‘evil.’

I fear for my children and grandchildren if their view of the world becomes simply ‘good, bad or indifferent,’ with no spiritual absolutes. Michael Wurmbrand, son of our founder, Lutheran Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, was orphaned while both parents were Christian prisoners in communist Romania. One lady received six years in prison just for feeding him. Michael told us recently, "Unless you find out the world is evil you will fall in love with this world. There is no alternative.’
By diluting the term evil we fall into a trap that makes us believe it does not exist. We forget the fall of man. We forget the temptation of Christ. We forget this world is lost. And we tend to tolerate evil here on earth.

Jesus did not teach us to pray, "Deliver us from improper thinking." There is a reason the Bible mentions evil repeatedly. As Christians we are not in a war against false or misguided ideas. We are fighting satanic evil, designed in hell. We are locked in a millenniums-old war pitting good against evil, God against darkness. And we are called to expose evil at every turn, regardless of what the world says."

Such warnings should encourage us to be ever more vigilant in this particular election campaign, where the ultimate in media bias exists and lies upon lies abound. The process of sanctification for the believer is one of separation, not love of the World. This does NOT mean isolation in the physical realm, but in the spiritual realm. The separation from evil in this world-system is a daunting challenge and task, indeed. As the times progress, it will become more daunting! But Christian, do not despair, He that is in you is greater than he who is the adversary.

Some are seizing upon 1 Peter 4:7, But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. Entering into watchful prayer is also a hard task, but the rewards are supernatural, and eternal! Thus it is written, and so it shall be:
1But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. 1 Timothy 3:1-5

The Christian Church is Sick

In an article of News of the Weird entitled "We'll drink to that", Chuck Shepherd reports the following:

"In August, Birmingham Cathedral announced plans to open a series of wine bars in London, as (according to an official) one of the 'alternative ways' of engaging non-church-goers".

A Scriptural Response to the Events of the Day

A SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE TO THE EVENTS OF THE DAY

I. The Events of the Day
A drift into more socialism where the state takes the place of God. Compare with Acts 2. This involves greed, power structures, and self-glorification which is actually a sin problem, not a problem with the free market philosophy.     Successful criminal and immoral activity that seems to go unpunished unless you are with the wrong crowd. Who said, “Power brings corruption, and absolute power brings absolute corruption”?
Unsolved crimes, and increased violent crime and sexual immorality
Law enforcement officers on the take
Unchecked advances of abortion – we are far down this road
Unchecked advances of homosexuality – we are far down this road too
Airwaves filled with filth and filthy language in the name of free speech
Lack of victory in Christian lives with apathy toward it
The presence of multitudes of false teachers or false practitioners who succeed (more people follow them) with their false teachings…with great departures from the scriptures. “Success” is measured by numbers, gain of wealth, and prestige.
The absence of the Holy Spirit in that which is called Christianity, with human effort replacing the work of the Holy Spirit
Multiple others, including corruption in “high places” and lack of respect for law, lack of accountability, lack of respect for elders by young, attire of little girls, government interference in all family aspects, government waste is notorious.

II. The Lord Makes His Reply To His People in Psalm 37
The Lord acknowledges the presence of evil
The Lord allows the presence of evil to test the hearts of His people as well as prove the hearts of unbelief: Deut. 13:1-4
First counsel of the Lord: “Do not FRET because of evildoers…”
“Fret” means to become enraged, blaze up, burn (get warm), incensed
Therefore the Lord’s counsel is to not become enraged as this type of emotion often leads to vindictive or even violent actions. Self-righteousness boils over into the gnashing of teeth that leads to deadly actions; consider Acts 7:54 ff. “Revenge is MINE, I will repay”, saith the Lord.
Second counsel: “Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.”
The apparent unchecked success of the workers of iniquity leads us to desire the same kind of success but for righteous causes instead of their wicked one. We see their success as swaying public opinion away from true values and into the deceptive web they have laid out that snares not only the victim but they themselves.
Desiring the same success we may be tempted to violate biblical principles and truth for the oppressive principles and captivity from which we were led by the Spirit of God when we were saved! See 2 Peter 1:4; 2:12. The result of salvation is to learn and know that there is NO right way to do the wrong thing . 2 Peter 2:19 ‘While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage’.
The destiny of the evildoers and the workers of iniquity: Psalm 37:2; 37:9 See also vv 10,12-17;20-21. Be warned! They shall be cut off by the Lord Himself.
The Lord’s Counsel of Action to the upright:
Trust in the Lord and do good
Live wisely on the land and be fed by His faithfulness
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart
Commit your way to the Lord, fully trusting Him, and He will bring it to pass
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him
Cease from anger, forsake wrath, especially do not fret (Be angry and sin not).
The destiny of the meek and trusting ones: They shall inherit the earth; They shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
