John Lawrence: Angelology Part 2 of 3

IV. The Nature of Angels
A. They are created beings. (Already discussed). As creatures of God they are under the sovereign control of God. Thus even Satan is limited (Job 1:12, 2:6)
B. They are spirit beings.
1. Angels belong to a "different" order from human beings even as man belongs to a different order from animals and animals belong to a different order from plants. The plants belong to a different order than the minerals, minerals belong to a different order than the atoms and molecules of which they are made.
Man is a living soul and has a material body. Angels are not limited by a material body. Heb 1:14, Ps. 104:4.
2. This does not rule out "some form" of body. However, Bancroft says they have no ‘form’ at all because we only know of two realms, matter and spirit. He adds, "There is no substance of which it can be said that it is neither matter nor spirit."
While this is true, we do not know everything yet, particu1arlly
in spiritual realms. Reasons why we may hold that angels have some form of body:
a. Our Lord implies that angels have a corporeal nature.
Luke 20:36
b. Redeemed man in the resurrection will exist in a "Spiritual body".
1 Cor. 15:44
2 Cor. 5:1-4
Phil. 3:21
And this mode of existence may well be that which is equal to what the angels enjoy now.
c. Also the Lord said in defining a spirit that "a spirit
hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have". Luke 24:39.
He did not say that it did not have form of some nature.
d. Further, when angels are seen in Scripture either in vision or in person, they have some form of body. Thus, they are not pure spirit as the Father and Holy Spirit are, but they are spirit creatures with some form of body.
God is omnipresent; they are not, they are local:
God has no limitations,
Angels have some limitations,
Man has more limitations.
The only way God reveals Himself in bodily form is in the Lord Jesus Christ. Col. 2:9; John 1:18. John Gill: "The angels are of a spiritual nature, not compounded of parts, as bodies are; and yet they are not so simple and uncompounded as God is, who is a spirit."
Rev. John Dick comments: "The vehicles, or bodies of angels, are of a much finer mould than the bodies of men; but although they were at all times invisible through such organs of vision as we possess, it would form no proof that they were destitute of such corporeal frames. The air we breathe is a material substance, yet it is invisible."
e. Also, the Cherubim are represented over the mercy seat
by actual material beings while God dwells in between the Cherubim. There is no idol there to represent the invisible God, but the Cherubim are very visible.
f. Demons are represented as disembodied spirits by Jesus but angels are not said to be the same. In fact, if God had created the angels in such a state they would be created imperfectly. Demons seek a body because they are disembodied and because they have none of their own. As many as 2000 could occupy one man. This is a different situation from angels and will be treated in full under a study of Demonology.
g. The lost angels are said to eat at times, showing they possess a "body". Cf. Gen. 3:14, Rev. 17:16, Gen. 18:4-5, Gen. 19:3
h. One final proof remains to reveal that angels have some
kind of corporeal nature. At Christ’s incarnation, He did not take upon Himself the nature of angels (that is, the constitution of existence), but He took on Him the seed of Abraham. Phil. 2:6 (‘being in the form of God’), Heb. 2:16
Their nature is different from God's nature, not only in a Creator-creature distinction, but in the nature of their existence. God is pure Spirit, angels are spirits but with some form of ‘organized’ body.
What kind of body? A refined spiritual body.
Note: those who hold that angels are pure spirit beings with no body form at all, ignore angels that appear to mankind with a body at various times. They make the change in the angel! I make the change in the men who are able to see them ...Lawrence
3. Angels do not change in mode of existence.
They remain the same. There is no growth, decrepitude or death. Luke 29:35-36
The wicked angels are to be punished with everlasting destruction.
The problem of the moral change from a state of holiness to unholiness for the angels that sinned will be discussed later.
C. They are immortal beings. See B. 3 just above.
D. They are a company, not a race.
As such they do not propagate after their kind. No "sons of angels" but only called "Sons of God". No babies are born to angels in the Scriptures. Likewise, there are no babies born in the resurrected state. This refutes Mormon doctrine.
Note that the Bible does NOT say that angels are "sexless", or cannot cohabit with women. Luke 20:3, Mark l2, Matt. 22:20.
Christ did not say that there is no distinction of sex in the resurrection state at all. And He did not say angels are sexless either. But the angels (always used in the masculine) as "Sons of God" have no parentage at all except the divine. Eph. 3:14-15. "The Father" is the One of whom every fatherhood in heaven and in earth is named.
Because they are a company and not a race, they sinned individually, and not in some head of the race. Among the fallen angels, each individually chose to sin and follow Satan.
E. They have all the characteristics of personality.
l. Intellect
1 Pet. 1:12. The only way angels can find out about the grace of God is through men. Their knowledge is, therefore imperfect and progressive. 2 Samuel 14:20; 1 Tim. 5:21
Their knowledge is much greater than man, yet it is not infinite, Matt. 24:36. An angel is wise and endowed with great knowledge from the beginning of their existence (cf. Adam in Gen. 2). But their knowledge has been increasing ever since, both through observation and experiences.
In particular, Satan has been observing how a lot of people have reacted for a very long time, and he knows by rearranging circumstances how to get the desired results. Cf. 1 Pet. 58.
2. Emotion: Luke 15:10, 1 Cor. 1l:1O, Heb. 1:6
3. Will:
1/3 of the angels willed to go with Satan.
2/3 of the angels willed not to rebe1.
Rev. 12:4 Cf. Isa. 14:12-14. "I will". Luke 1:19-20
F. They have great strength.
Ps. 103:20.
2 Thess. l:7
2 Pet. 2:ll
Matt. 28:2
Rom. 18:21
G. They have the ability to do some supernatural things on their own.
Luke 1:19-20, see above
Acts 12:7,23.
Gen. 19:10-11
2 Thess. 2:9
Rev. 13:12-17; Rev. 16:14.
H. They may impart strength to another. Luke 22:43
I. They have glory of being. This is true of the Holy Angels only.
Luke 9:26
Matt. 28:3.
Luke 24:4, Acts 1:10, Cf. 2 Cor. 11:4
J. They have great and swift mobility. Dan. 9:21-23. Matt. 26:53.
K. They may and do eat.
Gen.l8:1-8
Heb. 13:2.
Ps. 78:25.
A.V. = "angels food." i.e, manna coming from heaven
where angels dwell.
R.V. - "bread of the mighty"
Probably meaning angels, though the word
"might" is nowhere else used of them, However, the truth is in Psalm 103:20.
L. They speak to men (Satan in the garden), 1 Cor. 13:1 and other references to communication (refer to the history about Lot).
M. They see (angels as spectators)
1 Cor 11:10
1 Tim. 3:16, 5:21
1 Pet. 1:12
The Angels observe the joy of the Lord and of a sinner that repents: Jude 24; Luke 12:8,9, Rom 3:5
The Life of Christ 1 Tim 3:16
The Word of Prophecy: 1 Pet 1:12
The Church: 1 Cor 4:9, 11:10, 1 tim 5:21
The Judgments: Rom 14:10-11
The Angels were spectators at:
The creation of the world: Job 38:7
The Birth of Christ: Luke 2:13
The temptation: Matt. 4:11
The Resurrection: Matt. 28:2
The Ascension: Acts 1:10
They will be involved in the second coming of Christ. They have a spiritual discernment: Ezekiel 9; Gen. 19, etc.
V. The Appearance of Angels.
A. Generally speaking, they are invisible with few exceptions.
Gen. 32:1-2, 2 Kings 6:16-17, Luke 2:13.
B. They can appear in human form.
Genesis 18, 19.
C. When they do appear, they generally appear as men.
Luke 24:4, Acts 1:10-11.
Only one place, in a vision, do they appear as women,
in Zech. 5:9. Also see Rev. 8:13, they may appear in vision as other than what they are.
D. They sometimes are seen with wings and do fly.
Not necessary that their wings are necessary for flight.
Isa. 6:2 "...and with twain he did fly."
Ezek, 11:22 "Then did the cherubim lift up their wings"
Zech. 5:9 "Then I lifted up my eyes and looked, and there two women were coming out with the wind in their wings; and they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the ephah (basket?) between the earth and the heavens."
Dan. 9:21 "... even the man Gabriel...being caused to fly swiftly. "
Rev. 14:6 "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of Heaven."
5. They generally appear with "youthfulness", never as old men. Mark 16:5, "two young men."
6. Often what they wear seems to be white and dazzling.
Matt. 28:3.
Luke 24:4
Acts 1:10; 6:15, cf. 2 Cor. 11:4
This is how they are recognized as supernatural creatures.
Note: This is only true of holy angels and evidently, or may relate to their covering of righteousness as a creature of the Righteous Creator. Adam and Eve had a similar covering which they lost when they sinned. The fallen angels would perhaps appear as young men without the whiteness.
VI. The Abode of Angels.
A. The Good Angels – ‘Elect Angels’.
1. Scripture speaks of their abode in heaven,
Mark 13:32, "the angels which are in heaven."
Gal. 1:8, "though an angel from heaven."
Eph. 3:15, "the whole family in heaven and earth."
Matt. 6:10, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven
2. What "heaven" is their abode?
In order to find out we must analyze four passages.
a. The Teaching of the Word.
(1) 2 Cor. 12:1-6, Paul caught up to 3rd heaven.
Now if there is a 3rd Heaven, there must be a
second and a first.
(2) Isa. 14:13,14. "I will ascend into heaven"
Even though Satan was originally in the government
of God (Ezek. 28:14) his "abode" was not in the 3rd
heaven because he wanted to ascend to God’s throne.
This was not Satan's home; it was merely his office
work. He wanted it to be his home.
(3) Heb. 2:9, "made a little lower than the angels."
This could refer to either nature or position.
But this we know: In the Incarnation, the Lord
was made lower than the angels.
(4) Heb. 4:14, "passed through the heavens."
In the ascension, the Lord passed through the
"heavens" to get back to the throne, i.e., the 3rd
heaven.
b. Conclusion:
(1) There are three heavens.
(2) The angels abode is not in the 3rd heaven even though they may appear there and present themselves
there. Cf. Job 1-2.
(3) The usual distinction of the heavens is:
#1 Atmospheric heaven.
#2 Starry heaven.
#3 Throne of God.
However, there is no specific Scripture to designate the
latter.
(4) But, since angels were created before the earth
was--and the atmospheric heaven of the earth--
their abode must by nature be different from the
atmosphere of the earth, at least initially.
(5) Conclusion: Their abode is the 2nd heaven.
3. Sometimes angels are spoken of under the figure of a
star. Job. 38:7, Rev. 9:1;12:4, also Isa. 14:-15
This is a figure of speech to teach literal truth. As a star’s abode is in the 2nd Heaven, so we may conclude also that the abode of angels is the 2nd heaven also.
Note: It is significant and not without meaning that the phrase "the host of heaven" means both the stars and the angelic hosts of God. Their abode is the same and one is used as a figure of speech of the other. Also the "Lord of Hosts" has the same double meaning, for the Lord is Lord of the stars and also of the angels.
B. The Fallen or Evil Angels - Non-Elect Angels.
This will be dealt with in detail later, but just a word here in order to keep the right perspective.
1. Their original abode was the 2nd heaven, because they were originally all created good.
2. When they followed Satan in rebellion against God, they were cast down to the earth. Rev. 12:4, Rev. 9:1, Luke 10:17-20(esp.18)
Isa. 14:12.
Note: Satan has a ministry at this present time before the Lord as the accuser of the brethren (Rev. 12:10), even though his abode is on the earth and he often refers to his work of walking to and fro (Job) on the earth.
Note: While the abode of good angels also is in the 2nd heaven, nevertheless, they are sent to minister to our needs who are to be heirs of salvation down here on earth. Heb. 1:14.
VII. The Position of Angels.
A. In relation to man.
1. Higher than man.
Heb. 2:7,9.
"Little" = either position, or time.
2 Pet. 2:11.
2. Angels serve man. Heb. 1:14.
3. Redeemed man shall judge angels.
1 Cor. 6:3.
4. We are not to worship angels.
Col. 2:18. Rev. l9:10, 22:9.
Conclusion:
In our present state, we are lower than the angels.
In our future state, we are to be higher than angels and we will judge them.
In the mean time, we do not worship angels, even though they serve us and are greater than we are.
Dr. L. S. Chafer said: "Theology is the only thing that will keep you from going doctrinally insane."
If you look at only one or two passages, you might worship angels and be wrong.
B. In relation to Christ.
By essential nature and being, Christ is greater than angels. By incarnation He became lower than the angels because He became a man.
Heb. 2:5-9.
In this position, angels ministered to Him, but not at His command. Matt 4:6, Ps. 91:11, Matt. 4:11, Matt. 26:53.
In His ascension, He is exalted far above the angels.
1 Pet. 3:22, Eph. 1:20,21, John 1:51.
VIII. The Appearances of Angels in Scripture
They are frequent in the OT, and also in the Gospels, Acts, Epistles and Revelation, and they reveal what a large part angels play in the affairs of men. We will consider each section of Scripture separately.
A. The Old Testament
1. The Appearances of the Angel of Jehovah.
These are appearances of the Pre-Incarnate Lord Jesus Christ and this section of doctrine is fully developed properly under Christology. These references are listed here so as to distinguish them from appearances of true created angelic beings.

Zech. 12:8 – The Angel of the Lord will defend them
Mal. 3:1 – My Messenger will clear the way before Me
Note: In the NT there is no place where it says The Angel of the Lord appears. In the OT that is an expression of deity. The Greek always says an angel of the Lord appeared except for one reference in Matt. 1:24. Here it is The Angel already referred to and, therefore, the definite article is used. This agrees with the doctrine of Christology for after the Lord has taken on a body forever, He is never seen apart from that body.

The appearances of angels are seen to occur without specific dispensa-tional distinction in so far as we can determine. The first reference to angelic ministry to man is recorded in Abraham’s day. However, some of their ministries change from time to time according to the program of God. Moreover, it is definitely stated that no angels are put in subjection in the millennium, but this is given to man alone through the Lord Jesus Christ. (However, see ‘exception’ in Jude 6.)
