LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Part 2
I. AUDIENCE IDENTITY - THE ANGEL (angel or pastor?)OF THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS
A. The City –A PLACE OF PAGAN SORCERERS
B. The Church -Acts 18:2, 18-21; 18:24-20:1; 20:13-38
II. SPEAKER'S IDENTITY AND AUTHORITY TO SPEAK - The One who
holds the seven stars in His right hand; the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands
A. Not John's word or message but the One who holds and walks
B. The Seven Stars (angels or messengers) are the angels over those churches.
In His right hand indicates both authority and ownership
C. Walking among the lampstands
III. MESSAGE
A. Commendation for things they have done well
1. Works, labor and endurance (hupomone Grk. "to remain under")
2. Cannot bear those who are evil (practices church discipline)
3. Tested false apostles and found them liars (Discernment and public exposure)
4. With perseverance and endurance, they have given unwearied labor for His name ("labor" is the word for "hard work that brings a sweat")
5. Hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans which He also hates
a. Unclear exactly what this group is or what their doctrine is
b. It is believed that the end product of this group and its doctrine was immorality and licentiousness
c. May have Gnostic roots; may have been a special class of “enlightened" believers who believed sin was a body activity and the body was going to die anyway; may have been the group that led to the separation of the clergy and laity
B. Criticism and command to correct
1. They had left their first love
a. First in priority or
b. First in chronology or time
C. Regardless, it was to have the preeminence in their activity; the motivation for living the life for Christ
d. Now it had been left behind due to their activity and perhaps due to the success of that activity
2. His command to correct this problem
a. Remember: from where you have fallen. They had been raised up from the pit of paganism, the occult and idolatry to the high position of kings and priests of the Most High God. Now they were behaving as a mere "thought police". They had fallen from a lofty privileged position (see Luke 10:17-20)
b. Repent: Change of mind about God and your relationship to Him. Love of God is supreme to all other things
c. Do the first works: Acts 19:4-7; 19:8-10; 19:11-20; Luke 7:36-50
3. Result if they failed to act
a. He would come quickly
b. He would remove their lampstand quickly - their public testimony as the followers of Christ would vanish
IV. PROMISE TO THOSE WHO OVERCOME - The Lord himself would give to the overcomer the privilege to eat from the tree of life, in the midst of the
Paradise of God: Gen 2:9; 3:22-24; Rev 22:2
V. CALL TO THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO LISTEN - "He who has an ear,let him hear...
Deut 29:4 "Yet the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day.”
Ezek 12:2 "Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear; for they are a rebellious house.”
Mt 11:12-15 "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
Mt 13:3-6 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: "Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.”
