II. SPEAKER'S IDENTITY AND AUTHORITY TO SPEAK - The One who
holds the seven stars in His right hand; the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands
A. Not John's word or message but the One who holds and walks
B. The Seven Stars (angels or messengers) are the angels over those churches.
In His right hand indicates both authority and ownership
C. Walking among the lampstands

III. MESSAGE
A. Commendation for things they have done well
1. Works, labor and endurance (hupomone Grk. "to remain under")
2. Cannot bear those who are evil (practices church discipline)
3. Tested false apostles and found them liars (Discernment and public exposure)
4. With perseverance and endurance, they have given unwearied labor for His name ("labor" is the word for "hard work that brings a sweat")
5. Hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans which He also hates
a. Unclear exactly what this group is or what their doctrine is
b. It is believed that the end product of this group and its doctrine was immorality and licentiousness
c. May have Gnostic roots; may have been a special class of “enlightened" believers who believed sin was a body activity and the body was going to die anyway; may have been the group that led to the separation of the clergy and laity
B. Criticism and command to correct
1. They had left their first love
a. First in priority or
b. First in chronology or time
C. Regardless, it was to have the preeminence in their activity; the motivation for living the life for Christ
d. Now it had been left behind due to their activity and perhaps due to the success of that activity

2. His command to correct this problem
a. Remember: from where you have fallen. They had been raised up from the pit of paganism, the occult and idolatry to the high position of kings and priests of the Most High God. Now they were behaving as a mere "thought police". They had fallen from a lofty privileged position (see Luke 10:17-20)
b. Repent: Change of mind about God and your relationship to Him. Love of God is supreme to all other things
c. Do the first works: Acts 19:4-7; 19:8-10; 19:11-20; Luke 7:36-50

3. Result if they failed to act
a. He would come quickly
b. He would remove their lampstand quickly - their public testimony as the followers of Christ would vanish


IV. PROMISE TO THOSE WHO OVERCOME - The Lord himself would give to the overcomer the privilege to eat from the tree of life, in the midst of the
Paradise of God: Gen 2:9; 3:22-24; Rev 22:2

V. CALL TO THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO LISTEN - "He who has an ear,let him hear...
Deut 29:4 "Yet the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day.”
Ezek 12:2 "Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear; for they are a rebellious house.”
Mt 11:12-15 "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES - Part 1

I. "THE THINGS WHICH ARE..." Understanding the messages to the churches
A. "Are" obviously gives us an interpretive clue to understanding these messages
1. These are messages to 7 local churches which were existent at that time
2. It describes conditions of and warnings of things that were going on at the time John was alive and writing this book
3. Our interpretation must be primarily as messages being given as encouragement or counsel to the churches at that time and for them
4. Using the best historical and grammatical information available to us we try to reconstruct their situation and the message given to them in order that His message can be understood and application can be made of it lest we take the same erroneous steps they took or we come into the same danger some of them were in
B. Applications can be made then from our understanding of these messages
1. Personal - "He who has an ear to hear..." gives us a sobering call to listen to what he was saying to these churches be instructed by it. "He who overcomes…” gives us adequate motivation and reason to make serious application of what we have heard. Though the message is sent to the church as a whole these two phrases show us that individuals within the body can make an individual choice to not participate in the body's sin but come away from it in repentant faith. “The Just shall live by faith.”
2. Corporate - any church is prone and vulnerable to the same maladies listed in these messages. Any church in any period of this present age can receive counsel from these messages and make the needed
corrections or receive the encouragement from these messages. The problems listed in the churches are typical problems of the warfare put up by the Adversary against the church and its Lord. It may also be seen that what is described by them is the successive stages of the church and the development of the church any place it is planted
3. Prophetic - It is clear from the words of this book that the messages contained therein are words of prophecy. Looking prophetically
through time, from the day of this being written until our present time, a fairly good picture can be painted of the church through the "historical ages" that have transpired. Since the third and final category about which John was to write, "the things which shall take place after this," one could make a reasonable case that we are still in the "present", since "after this" has not happened yet and that these messages are a picture of the church through history up to the time of the Tribulation of Daniel, prophesied by our Lord. Caution must be taken here for such applications are more arbitrary
and conjectural than the ones offered in the primary interpretation. We might see the following:
a. Ephesus - the church in the first century beset by false teachers, fighting them off but losing its first love in the process to 100 AD
b. Smyrna - the church in the second and third centuries under persecution by the Romans from 100 AD to 316 AD. The church's bishops were looking forward to the coming 1000 year reign of Christ, the Kingdom of God. They endured 10 separate periods of official persecution before it ended with Constantine
c. Pergamos - the church's wedding to the world with Constantine. A Roman emperor becomes the "head" of the church. Persecution has ended and the church has become acceptable. Now it takes its place among the powers that be. It becomes a "fortress" of power. An unconverted emperor,
Satan's throne, has become the leader of the church. It is during this period the church is developing a clergy/laity division, the Nicolaitans, and the papacy begins in the 7th century. The church is entering the Dark Ages ~
d. Thyatira - Perhaps the word means "continual sacrifice'. The Nicolaitan heresy introduces the "Mass", continuously offering the sacrifice of Christ's once-for-all death on the cross! The priests have now taken the position of the Levitical priesthood, the church has replaced Israel and the religion of Jezebel, Astarte and Baal, mother and child, has replaced Christianity. But hospitals and caregivers are those in the convents and monasteries, in the name of Jesus are still being done. In there are still "remnants" of believing enclaves throughout the same region occupied by the empire and the "church."
e. Sardis - The church is claiming to be a living vital agency that God sees as dead! These are the years just before the "Reformation". Even among this dead church there are some who have not defiled themselves with the gross heresies of the "church". These are the precursors of the reformation
f. Philadelphia - The church in reformation. The open door that no man can close was the restored truth of faith alone, in Christ alone, by the Word alone. Unfortunately, the ones who "discovered" these truths and restored them to the church did not free themselves from the old ways of love of power, formalism and ritualism. They spent too much time fighting each other and the old church. They did not restore the great love of the blessed hope and glorious appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ nor of the meaning and reality of His Kingdom. They restored the priesthood of every believer but kept the same or similar hierarchies on a much smaller level. In Europe they could not divorce themselves from the state.
g. Laodicea - the people's glory. The church is now in the hands of the people to become whatever the people want it to be. It is
not cold, that is, to offer a cold refreshing drink to the thirsty nor were they hot to offer the healing therapy of the hot springs. They were tepid. They had a false estimation of their value. Christ is on the outside of the church looking in, knocking to seek entry to see if there may be even one who
would invite him in for fellowship. This is the church today!
C. The churches are treated as individual churches not as a single unit.
1. Each church is a local church with its own messenger.
2. Though they are connected by common faith and salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ, they are not treated as a federation.
3. They are not called on to unite or become as one with one "bishop" leading all the others.
4. Part of the mystery of the church is that Christ unites them "mystically" not organically. He is the head of each one as well as the head of all.
5. There is no call for a church hierarchy but each church is held responsible for its own behavior

Governmentium

Lawrence Livermore Laboratories has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.


Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from four days to four years to complete.


Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2- 6 years; It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons

The Truth of Romans 1 and the Last Days

A December 7th article in FarmWeek of the Illinois Farm Bureau, of which I am a member, indicates the truth of Romans 1. Daniel Grant writes about the HSUS effort to take animal care debate to a “higher power”.

Farmers and ag leaders no longer can rely simply on scientific and economic evidence to successfully defend current livestock production practices. The Humane Society of the United States in recent years added religion to the animal welfare debate and likely will intensify the effort with its Faith Outreach program, according to Wes Jamison, associate professor of communications at Palm Beach University.

Jamison talked about the animal activist group’s focus on religion and what it could mean to ag supporters during the Illinois Commodity Conference in Bloomington. “This debate is not about science or economics”, said Jamison, who recently completed a nine-month re- search project in which he analyzed why HSUS is so effective in shaping consumer opinion about animal ag.
“They (HSUS leaders) realized something was missing to tie animal welfare issues together and they found religion,” he said. HSUS currently is spending about $1.2 million per year on its Faith Outreach program in an attempt to convert and change people’s minds about animal ag, according to Jamison.

HSUS on its website states the Faith Outreach program “seeks to engage people and institutions of faith with animal protection issues on the premise that relicious values call upon us all to act in a kind and merciful way towards all creatures.”
The HSUS statement seems to be well-intended, but Jamison believes there is a hidden agenda.
“The real target audience is pet owners” who are a key demographic when it comes to state and local elections, Jamison said. HSUS wants to remind pet owners “they should feel guilty about treating one animal like family and another like cuisine.”

HSUS is attempting to frame animal welfare as a religious and moral issue with the understanding that getting consumers to feel guilty can inspire them to take actions that could have negative consequences on livestock production, he said. Voters inn California, for example, last year approved a referendum to ban the use of veal and sow gestation crates.

In the end, “Their strategy (at HSUS) is to legislate you out of production,” Jamison told the farm audience. Farmers, therefore, must engage in the debate and look for ways to help consumers differentiate companion animals from food animals. Farmers also must empower consumers to feel good about farm products, he said. “Research shows consumers want to use your meat-based products,” he added. “HSUS has the difficult job trying to change their behavior.”--

Natural Law - Conclusion

Application of Biblical Truth to Issues of the Day

II. THE FOUNDATIONS OF NATURAL LAW – IN THE BEGINNING

A. Genesis 1:26-28
Man is in the image of God: personality and variation; reason and rationality; urge to create with imagination and skill (this is inherent); goodness; justice and righteousness; love; responsibility and accountability; authority

Conscious conscience! Knows right and wrong

Work and productivity are basic rights and responsibilities: what’s his is his and what’s mine is mine wrt property

Accountability

One God who created all things-Lord of heaven AND earth

All life comes from God and is sustained by Him, both human and all other

God, not men or Satan, is sovereign over the nations: Governments will give account to Him for what they do!

The ability to make a covenant and contract with a reasonable expectation of its terms being met by both parties

Only God has authority over life and death. Genesis 9 indicates there is only a delegation given to men.

Personal responsibility

Sexual relationships are between a man and his wife from creation

It is the gift of God to enjoy the fruits of one’s labor and to produce more; for another or government to take it away may be stealing; debt is a form of slavery

Man is free to expand his boundaries

All men are created equal but not all are gifted the same…parable of the talents. It is also written that God is no respecter of persons.

Government is (only) needed for justice within groups of people living together in a local region…ordained of God…render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s; government is limited and by the consent of the governed

B. Natural law is what was known to previous generations as “common sense”, and is the subject of the book of Proverbs

Proverbs teaches the fear of the Lord under ALL situations and contrasts the differences of those who are obedient to natural law and those who are not

In government, natural law teaches that governments exist solely for the praise of those who do good and the punishment of those who do evil. Rom. 13:1-7; 1 Pet. 2:13-14

C. Can one be saved by Natural Law? Absolutely not, it brings one to the point of desiring salvation and seeing the necessity of it.

Psalm 50:22-23 explains much. Even in pretended obedience by the haters of God, a healthier, more moral society is cultivated. But without saving faith it cannot endure long. Psa. 81:13-16; Psa. 82:3-4. In this regard homosexuality is “un-natural”.

The summary of Natural Law was given by the Lord Jesus Christ in the two great commandments, in which also the written was contained: to Love God with all your heart and mind and strength, and to love your neighbor even as yourself.

Natural Law

Application of Biblical Truth to Issues of the Day:

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. –That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,--That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.


I. ARE THERE MORAL TRUTHS EVERYONE KNOWS? THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE UNITED STATES THOUGHT SO. AND GOD’S WORD SAYS YES!
A. Romans 1:18-23
Vs. 18 Truth that is known to men is intentionally repressed in unrighteousness: God’s wrath is revealed against this; God is a communicator and has revealed Himself and His truth to mankind, It angers Him for His liberating Truth to be hidden in unrighteous behavior.

Vs. 19 God has shown this truth to them. The knowledge of God is in every man.

Vs. 20 His invisible attributes are revealed in the created order and are even understood by that order. The ones repressing this truth are without excuse before God and He will be just in judging all men because of it. All men are guilty before God because they, like Adam and Eve before them have disobeyed Him and run to hide from Him.

Vs. 21 The knowledge of God is ignored, His person and work are not acknowledged, leading men into ignorance and moral darkness. In these states of spiritual ignorance and moral darkness, men become foolish refusing to listen to instruction of any kind. Yet in their conceit, they consider themselves wise and enlightened. This leads them into idolatry and bondage to their own lusts. They have rejected the natural law and have now become brutish slaves.

B. Romans 2:2, 12-16
Vs. 2 God judges all men by His Truth.

Vs. 11,12 Those who have sinned outside the law will be judged by the law they had created for themselves/

Vs. 14 When Gentiles by nature do the things in the law, they are a law to themselves.

Vs. 15 They do the things in the law because it is written in their hearts and conscience by God. This writing is by God…NATURAL LAW.

Global Warming Alarmists

Based on the news reports of the past week regarding Facing Scandal, Head of Climate Research Lab to Temporarily Step Down, can we say this;

The degree of one's emotion varies inversely with
one's knowledge of the facts-the less you know the hotter you
get!
