Biblical Anthropology

Edgemont Bible Church Wednesday Night Bible Study Notes of February 18th, 2009

I. Our Creation
A. Adam and Eve were created by a direct act of God, not by evolution or theistic evolution. Even Secularists talk about “Intelligent Design” to their evolutionary friends. Alternatives to the creation account include strange, strange speculations of aliens, space stuff, etc., etc. On the mission field, our missionary encountered worldly anthropologists who wanted NO mission work to produce changed lives for the sake of leaving remote tribes in a “pristine and natural” condition.
B. Created as adults, not as children...some call this the “appearance” of age.
C. Both were created in the image of God. Gen. 1:26-27 This involves intellect or mind, emotions or sensibilities, and will.

II. Our Nature and Purpose
A. Man is body, soul and spirit. 1 Thess. 5:23
B. He is to worship and glorify God. The Bible actually shows that God provides everything needed for life and godliness. Counsellees often only want to be free of consequences, not biblical instruction for change of life and life style which is true freedom.

III. Our Fall
A. Original Sin
   Adam was our representative. Rom. 5:12-21
   All born of human parents are guilty in Adam
   We are born as sinners. Ps. 51:4
   We sin deliberately! Isa. 53:6
B. What is Sin?
   “A missing of the mark (target)”. Rom 3:23

   Inwardly and outwardly, doing and not doing, thought, word, action.
   Anything that offends God, who is absolutely Holy.

Establishing My Presuppositions (Cont.)
Why should I have hope? What is my hope? In the secular dictionary hope is defined as a “feeling”. It can be the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best; sometimes it is a particular instance of this feeling or the grounds for this feeling. It might pertain to living or dying, medicine, winning or losing or to replace belief, desire, or trust. The scriptural understanding extends far beyond the feeling ID to that which is best described as something which only God can do. Therefore, my hope is dependent on Him. In expressions such as “Abraham, who is the father of us all, (as it is written, “A father of many nations have I made you”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. In hope against hope he believed”, and in “For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it”, or in “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame”... our hope is directed in and through that which God has done. It begins by grace, and continues by His work in me. There are only two reality directions that hope can take: either for self-desires, or for my future in the One who loved me and gave Himself for me. My hope in the future is dependent on Him and He will not fail.

What has real value? The materialist world subscribes to the magazine of “What will you do for me without any work or value extended on my part”. But real value for me is that which, once again, only God can do. The value of God's Son is priceless. The value of His work is priceless. The value of what God is now doing, and will do is priceless. Look up, Oh Sinner, your salvation draweth nigh. Real value is determined by that which is enduring, and gives glory to God.

For what am I responsible? We may get bogged down with jobs or marriage or physical problems or loneliness. We may undertake some things for which we are unable to complete. My basic responsibility in this world system is NOT that which the world may assign. It is to account for my standing before the Holy One. A right standing indicates responsibility taken and progressing. Jobs, marriage, children, material possessions and health are all subtitles. So is my position in politics and the community.

What is my responsibility to my family, friends and community? I think this is best summed simply by establishing God's desire for His children's conduct in both word and deed. An oft used example is good for the soul when God declares that a father is to provide both discipline and care for his family through love and truth. “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him—a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts”. Agape love demands sacrifice!

For what is my church responsible? Why does it exist? A well known theologian puts it this way: 1) To give glory to God, 2) To edify the saints, 3) To evangelize both neighbor and foreign by this motto: Sanctify Christ as Lord in your heart, always being ready to give a defense for the hope that lies within, yet with gentleness and reverence. All good things come from above. Only the believer truly believes this.

For what is government responsible? Why does it exist? There really are three views in the world. The first is that of the one in authority who governs by oppression. The second is that of liberal conscience who, contrary to God's established order, tries to govern with magnanimity but fails because of his own sin. The last is stated by God Himself: “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.”

What is freedom and liberty? The founders of our country expressed themselves in terms of true freedom and liberty in this way: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” In response to this a war was fought and men died. The securing of freedom and liberty is costly.” Did you catch the phase, 'men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights'? If the Creator initiated the definition of true freedom and liberty, then we must look to Him to further define it: “...know the TRUTH, and the truth shall set you free”. All suppression of the TRUTH is oppression. That is slavery and bondage and cruelty in the name of the one who does the oppressing. And we categorically state that either the Creator is who He claims to be or He is a liar. He who claims truth but denies the Creator is the author of slavery and bondage.

What is tyranny? What is bondage? Tyranny takes away freedom and liberty, both in political processes and in spiritual realms of worship, service and just plain living. It has been pointed out throughout the many years by both philosophers and theologians that all governments progress through stages of more and more bondage of its subjects. Call it doing things their way, or taxation, or corruption or laws that inhibit and limit private property, or for the common good, when tyrants both judge and rule, freedom is lost. Even so, come Lord Jesus.

What are rights and from where do they originate? Since we believe that all rights originate from the Creator, then we must study who He is, and define those rights by His character. Inasmuch as it is written that “For from Him and through Him and to Him are ALL things”, the rights that He established are those which are best for man, and in opposition to those which the adversary works on among men. These are those who “walk according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience”, and in which true freedom and the attendant rights granted by the Creator dissipate and disappear, although sometimes slowly.

How am I to treat my fellow man? Let the purpose of the church be our portion. Let the name of Christ be exalted above all. Let my tongue utter no unkind or unwholesome word. Let the image of Christ Himself be revealed in me. Let my conversation be a blessing, not a curse. Let it be known that believing God is counted for righteousness. Let it be said of every action that I imitate Paul, as Paul imitates Christ. And let it be known both here and afterwards that He is King of kings, and Lord of lords. Then, it goes without saying that honesty, integrity, truthfulness, faithfulness and the fruit of the Spirit will fulfill His desire for my relationship to my fellow man.

Establishing My Presuppositions

Everyone has presuppositions. You may call them your philosophy of life, your beliefs, your way of thinking, or the basis of how you apply both theory and practice. You may even deny that your presuppositions shapes who you are and the way you live. But it is undeniable that all are different, think differently, act differently and are unique creatures in word and deed. The Wednesday night Bible Study listed a series of questions to explore your presuppositions and the impact on you as a person (the comments after each question are my own):

What is the authority for my life? Bible versus self versus false prophet(s) versus "mystery".

What is truth? Science versus Bible versus self determined. Jesus said God's Word is truth. Do I believe this, do I live it, do I understand it? Is the separation over truth between the world and myself irreparable? Is there any common ground between unbelieving teachers in all areas and the Christian believer?

How did all of this get here? There seems to be only three options: chance, ...some pagan spirit, ... or the God of Creation. The question of origins as disputable is enlarging, not decreasing.

What is the purpose for all of this? I say to glorify God. There is no other acceptable answer that gives satisfaction for self purpose or relationships. All others lead to self defeat and "nothingness".

Who am I? Am I a product of my own imagination, others' imagination, or does it even matter? If I am made in the image of God, then I should also know and understand that I came into this world dead in trespasses and sins, ...and I will go out the same way....unless... the sovereign God chooses to give me life in the Son by faith alone. The emphasis in John 3:16 is on believing.

From where did I come? The natural man does not know, but speculates that two bits of chemical stuff came together and somehow grew. He further speculates that it finally arrived at two "cells" in a mother's womb to fertilize and grow. But he cannot answer why. With authority other than the Bible other speculation leads to "other people", but where did they come from? With Biblical authority we say with conviction that Psalm 139:13-16 gives both satisfaction and wisdom of understanding.

Where am I going? The world system gives options; the Bible gives different options; the man on the street doesn't know. From reincarnation to nothingness to heaven for all to "who cares", the Word of God is explicit on our final destination: either heaven or hell. There are no other options. Choose this day whom you will follow; as for me and my house, we choose to follow the Lord. Ask what has real value versus temporal value?

How then shall I live? This answer is only twofold: unto God...or self. The world chooses the latter...the broad path and gate to destruction, and many find it. The narrow path and gate to eternal life is narrow indeed, and few there be that find it.

Why are there wrong things? This is the question of the ages. Books and books and orators and some preachers and all others decry that "it is just not fair". But the fairness doctrine comes from self desires, not from the Creator. There are none that seeks after righteousness, not one. There are none that do good, no, not even one. God's perspective is not man's perspective. His ways are not my ways, and yet He promises me that all things work together for good, to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Even my heart attack.

Why is there suffering? We are promised and labeled with frailties of the flesh, of the emotions and of the mind. We are promised with suffering as Christian believers. For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. Have I placed complete, or just partial trust in Him?

Calling a Lie What It Is...A LIE

"Every new president flatters himself that he, kinder and gentler, is beginning the world anew. Yet, when Barack Obama in his inaugural address reached out to Muslims by saying 'to the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect,' his formulation was needlessly defensive and apologetic. Is it 'new' to acknowledge Muslim interests and show respect to the Muslim world? Obama doesn't just think so, he said so again to millions in his al-Arabiya interview, insisting on the need to 'restore' the 'same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago.' Astonishing. In these most recent 20 years -- the alleged winter of our disrespect of the Islamic world -- America did not just respect Muslims, it bled for them. It engaged in five military campaigns, every one of which involved -- and resulted in -- the liberation of a Muslim people: Bosnia, Kosovo, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. The two Balkan interventions -- as well as the failed 1992-93 Somalia intervention to feed starving African Muslims (43 Americans were killed) -- were humanitarian exercises of the highest order, there being no significant U.S. strategic interest at stake. In these 20 years, this nation has done more for suffering and oppressed Muslims than any nation, Muslim or non-Muslim, anywhere on Earth. Why are we apologizing? And what of that happy U.S.-Muslim relationship that Obama imagines existed 'as recently as 20 or 30 years ago' that he has now come to restore? Thirty years ago, 1979, saw the greatest U.S.-Muslim rupture in our 233-year history: Iran's radical Islamic revolution, the seizure of the U.S. Embassy, the 14 months of America held hostage. ... Every president has the right to portray himself as ushering in a new era of this or that. Obama wants to pursue new ties with Muslim nations, drawing on his own identity and associations. Good. But when his self-inflation as redeemer of U.S.-Muslim relations leads him to suggest that pre-Obama America was disrespectful or insensitive or uncaring of Muslims, he is engaging not just in fiction but in gratuitous disparagement of the country he is now privileged to lead." --columnist Charles Krauthammer

A CALL TO LIBERTY (Cont.)

III. LIBERTY: FREEDOM WITH PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

    A. This is a call to civil liberty or liberty within a society. Here is a quote from Noah Webster in 1828: "…the liberty of men in a state of society, or natural liberty, so far only abridged and restrained, as is necessary and expedient for the safety and interest of that society. A restraint of natural liberty (freedom), not necessary or expedient for the public, is tyranny or oppression. Civil liberty is an exemption from the arbitrary will of others, which exemption is secured by established law, which restrain every man from injuring or controlling another. Hence the restraints of law are essential to civil liberty."

    B. Personal responsibility is governing one’s life in such a manner as to give a good account to God, the Creator and Lord of all, for one’s behavior toward God, himself, his fellow man and for the stewardship of all he is given.

    C. When one lives alone his freedom is bounded only by his conscience, however informed, and by the laws of nature. However, when living with more than himself his freedom is now restrained by the willingness of another or others to tolerate his behavior and his ability to force the others to accept it. Agreements can be reached by the consent of all for the safety and well-being of the whole to the limits and standards of acceptable behavior. Restraint of liberty not for the necessity or expediency of the society or the pressing of one’s liberty upon the others because he is able to is tyranny and oppression.

    D. Christian liberty is the use of one’s freedom to do as one’s conscience allows bounded by his love for the brethren or personal responsibility.
      1. Christian liberty is founded upon the principle that as one loves his neighbor as himself, he has fulfilled the whole law of God.
      2. Christian liberty does not need the restraints of law. To the degree we govern ourselves by a Christian conscience, we need little or NO government over us. (Law is for the lawless!)
      3. Christian liberty finds its expression in the guideline our Lord Jesus gave us: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If it is not the way you would like to be treated, do not treat others that way. This is the basic practice of personal responsibility.

   E. A call issued for the return to some basic self-government:
"I am responsible to God for all that I say, do and think and will one day give an account for it!"
Listen first!
Don’t interrupt when another is speaking (think about media interviews)
Think before you speak
Don’t decide ‘til you hear the other side
There is no such thing as objectivity; test everything by the TRUTH
Enjoy the people you are with especially your brothers in the Lord
Enjoy God‘s creation and take care of it (personal responsibility)
If you make a mess, you clean it up
If you borrow it, return it
If you don’t know it’s true, don’t repeat it (gossip)
Put it back where you found it
Leave no trace you were there
Leave a place better than the way you found it
Laugh, especially at yourself; don’t take yourself too seriously
A place for everything and everything in its place
Guard your liberty and do not let it be taken from you
